Seems fourth grade is a year that pushes heretofore math-lovers into math-dislikers. (If 'hate' was not a forbidden word, I'd have accurately used it here.)

Reducing fractions. Ill-remembered multiplication tables. Factors and lowest common denominators. Each day after-school my maternal math patience is pushed.

Enter Daddy...and beer.

Last night at the dinner table, we homeschooled.

On one side of Double Daddy's beer can, the volume was listed as "24 ounces;" on the other, it was "one pint, eight ounces." Myriad math ensued.

Variables. Liquid measurements. In-head (not the foam kind) division.

Never underestimate the possibilities of the family meal.

If you need our teaching aids, we recommend the larger (or is that lager?) can above.

So many great lessons in a can o' beer!

And I have to tell you...I finally got "ale-gebra"...but it took me a few minutes. It's still tripping me up every time I glance at my blogroll! ;)
