Revealing and Revisiting History

Watching PBS'/Ken Burns' riveting multi-part documentary The Roosevelts with He-Twin last night. As the narrator read personal letters elaborating on the close friendship between Eleanor Roosevelt and Lorena "Hick" Hickok...

He-Twin (thoughtfully, with compassion...): "Mom, do you think Eleanor Roosevelt might have been a lesbian?"

Mom: "You know, Honey, for many years there have been scholars and history buffs who believe she might have been. She was married to Franklin Roosevelt, and had children with him, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she wasn't a lesbian."

He-Twin (with empathy): "You know, I think she was, but if she told people, she knew she wouldn't be accepted. That's really sad."

Insightful words from a barely teenaged boy. ('Boys will be boys' should be eliminated as a phrase...)

In this century, here's hoping we can genuinely love our fellow Americans for who they truly are.
