Way Back When-esday - Gloom, Despair, and Agony, Oh Me...

Well, not really.

Dateline: Spring 2012
Twins' Age: 10

Silhouetted in the lower left corner of the image above is He-Twin. Throughout their early years, our twosome enjoyed participating in the outstanding musical productions presented by their elementary each spring. The younger students were assigned group/ensemble parts. Once a child reached 3rd grade however, they began to audition for speaking and singing roles in front of a casting panel of judges.

As a boy who leaned more act-y and less sing-y---a boy enchanted by the slice of Americana provided by reruns of "HeeHaw," for both his 3rd grade audition and 4th grade audition, he sang humorous nuggets from that nostalgic show.

When 5th grade---the final year in elementary---rolled around, Darren decided to stray from his "tradition" and sang the Sammy Davis, Jr. classic, The Candy Man. The team of casting judges, familiar with his HeeHaw auditions in previous years, chided him a bit afterward,"We were expecting more HeeHaw." Without missing a beat, he began singing, "We loved the time we spent with you, to share a song and a laugh or two. May your pleasures be many, your troubles be few..."

My quick-thinking little actor ended up getting a great role for that very special final elementary production, The Wiz.

Peeks back at my precious performer warm my heart this mid-week.
(Knowing I will get to see him in his first dinner theatre work this weekend is doubly warming!)
