Darren (excitedly, but with a wee bit of just apprehension) :

The photograph might lead one to believe there is room a'plenty surrounding the orb easing the extraction process. Be not deceived. It's a tight fit. Suggestions? (We'll also entertain ideas on how to alleviate the rust encircling our 1929 sink drain...)
PS - Since we mentioned "Square Pegs," a huge congratulations and best wishes to newly expecting twin parents Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick (and their surrogate) for a healthy, happy pregnancy and meeting with their twin girls this summer.

Woah. Only thing I can think of is to remove the pipe below it and either push it out from the top or the bottom with a long stick....Nice shot Darren!

Uh-oh... when I see that picture, my first thought is to stab it with something, and pull it up. Like a harpoon, but tiny. You have one of those, right?:)
Perhaps you could get enough suction with the plunger to suck it up?

vacuum cleaner hose . . . it will pull it right out.
reminds me of my little one who, at a baby shower this past weekend, spent who knows how long dropping toothpicks down an air conditioning vent in the floor before I realized what he was doing.
I too went too went to small harpoon type extraction. Here's hoping you don't have to pay someone!
Will a sharp knife or icepick stab it for removal? So funny but not if you are the person removing it.
OOOooo, just had another idea - duct tape on the end of a stick of some sort???
i have no clue how to get that out, trial + error on all the above suggestions?
I'm thinking maybe this is a ground-floor pipe, so you can't easily get down there to take pipes apart?
Otherwise, try the vacuum as others have suggested, but in case it's too big a space to work, I'd go with a turkey skewer on a broomstick, or something like it.

Exciting news for the Parker-Brodericks! Hadn't heard that one.
My only suggestion would be to contact an auto body shop. They have those plunger-type tools that pull out dents. Maybe they have a smaller one that would pull out SuperBalls?
Liquid dish soap and a shop vac, you might need an adapter to make the hose smaller so you get good suction. Tried an proved as my little angel tossed not one but THREE little bathtub balls into the TOILET once.
Yep. Unscrew the pipe. Beware, though. It can be a nasty job.
