Larger Than Life

Paul Bunyan. Casey Jones. Hercules. King Kong. The list could---and does---go on and on.

Our full-family excursion last week began with a trek to Luray Caverns, with a night's stay in New Market, Virginia. Who could have known our cozy quarters at the Quality Inn were connected to the tasty Johnny Appleseed restaurant?

Apple fritters as an "apple-tizer."(Darren used the term "apple-tizer" prior to seeing the menu's category of "apple-teasers.")

A friendly match of jump-the peg with the table-dwelling game.
(Daddy insisted he had been the international champion...having traveled to Hong Kong to earn the title. Sarah was rightly skeptical.)

A friendly history lesson and farewell from Johnny himself upon a simple press of a button.
(Real name: Johnny Chapman. Real fruit: Apple, not the faded pumpkin-esque gourd in his hand.)

So getting into the Thankful Thursday spirit, the traditional blessing :

The Lord's been good to me, and so I thank the Lord---for giving me the things I need, the sun and the rain and the appleseed. The Lord's been good to me. Amen.

I love the Johnny Appleseed statue. I used to want to wear a pot on my head but my mom would not let me - she said it made her pots dirty putting them on my head! Oh well! Love the photo op!

That's great! I did a whole unit on all of those people the last month of school, talking about American Legends...if only the twins had been in my class! LOL! Just kidding! :-) Sounds like a great summer!

What a fun trip. Lots of fabulous pun opportunities. I'm going to have a ball with stuff like that when my kids get older.

Hey, Cheryl! I was in a funk yesterday and was singing that song in my car to help myself snap out of it. I'm not sure whether it was the song that did trick or the delicious cannoli I ate shortly thereafter. Still, it's a great little tune.

We used to sing that song in Girl Scouts.
Love it.
