Backseat Banter: Installment I

On the way to Sarah's horseback riding class (Daddy and Darren were at home)...

Sarah (clearly baiting): "So I don't get what's so bad about the 'b-word'; after all it just means a female dog."

Mommy:
"When people use it, they're typically using it to hurt someone's feelings, and that is never right."

Sarah: "I wouldn't ever use it to say '_______* is a b-word,' but if we get a girl dog, I can say this is our b-word, right?" (*S named a continually problematic classmate, omitted here to protect the marginally innocent.)

Mommy: "C'mon Sarah. You know you could just introduce the dog without using that word."

Sarah: "I think that the b-word would be a great name for a band."

Mommy:
[speechless---silently in tacit agreement]

On the way home from Sarah's horseback riding class...

Sarah: "When I get older, I think I will name my band 'Once Upon a B-word.'"

Oh, I am so laughing right out loud! Besides the subject matter and Sarah's awesome personality, your phrases, "marginally innocent" and "in tacit agreement" paint the mood so beautifully. You are amazing, my friend! And I'm thinking you and Sarah are two peas in a pod!

once upon a "bword" would be an excellent band name...this was hilarious...how on earth did you keep a straight face?

Ooh, someone wanted to test, didn't she? :-)

Though, far and away, my favorite thing about this is her band name. She's totally right. It would be an awesome band.

Oh, the things we have to outwardly disapprove of in the name of good parenting. At least you've got this record of it for later!

Isn't it fun when they start to learn about the "bad" words? We have these conversations whenever someone on the school bus teaches the girls a new "bad" word. Our problem is the word is usually in another language, so the girls think it's funny to say it in front of people who don't understand it.
