Way Back When-esday - Wild About Wiley...

...Kehinde Wiley.

Dateline: May 2010
Twins' Age: 8

They've been regulars at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts since they were twin-utero.

In early 2010, the VMFA debuted their spectacular expansion, and featured this incredible acquisition by the then not-quite-as-well-known artist, Kehinde Wiley----who like Darren and Sarah, also happens to be a twin.  (In a tip of the hat to the Yoruba culture, Kehinde's mother, a linguist, chose Kehinde as her second born's name----often a name for a second-born twin. His older twin brother was named Taiwo, the "first to taste the world.")

I asked our two to adopt the posture of the the sitter---well, stander---in Willem Van Heythuysen (above, after Franz Hals), and then, how that stance made them feel.

Their answers? Confident. Strong. Rich. Important.

Exactly, my little art historians.

When we get the wondrous opportunity to view VMFA's latest blockbuster exhibition, Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic beginning this weekend, we can push further into Wiley's multi-layered intent....and appreciate the pluperfect craftsmanship and style of his vibrant works en masse.

Looking back at museum visits past, and excitedly looking forward to the near future, warms my heart this mid-week.
