Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

A Darren-centric post to companion Sarah's of yesterday...

As the kids were deciding upon the pieces for their arts festival display table, I mentioned how people viewing their art might appreciate an "About the Artist" flyer to give a bit of personal background. (Who doesn't read the labels for the skinny on the artists in the museum?)

That was all the motivation Darren needed. He was ready to dictate his "Artist's Statement," and so he did. The following is all his wording (and requested punctuation) except for his assimilation of my suggested "objects" instead of "things."

DARREN JACOB LAGE:
ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Darren is a seven year old artist. He is good at painting solid objects. Nutcrackers, animal statues to birdhouses, you name it.

He is very good at behaving at school. So far, on his tests he has received 100 = A!

He does tae kwon do at Master Cho’s Tae Kwon Do School. He is a green belt with a blue stripe. He lives on [street name], [house number].

Darren enjoys going to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Some of his favorite artists are Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, David Horvath and Sun Min Kim (the creators of UglyDolls).

He can’t wait to meet you.

He took second place* in his age group for a picture of the Uglydolls...despite the fact that he's proudest of this nutcracker he painted. Now he's more confident with two-dimensional efforts.

Cheryl,
You should be proud - not only are your children amazing artists - they also have an impressive knowledge of the art world. My 7 year old would not know who any of these artists are - never mind be able to select her favorites. You have inspired me to get the kids to the Met - fast!
