It's Not an Island

..it's a bag of misfit toys.
Tasked with a pre-holiday playroom purge, the kids just brought this first sack of sacrifice-ables my way minutes ago. The irony -- the bag-topping Rudolph, who when you press his tail, his nose lights up and he chirps "We're all misfits, too" -- was not lost on me.

Feeling a bit like a maternal misfit, truly. I am summoning every last bit of fortitude to not plow in and extract the HappyMeal set of Pixar's "Cars" we collected and played with for hours, or the JayJay the Jet Plane friends. No, Mom. Let them give so others may enjoy...

Okay. Now I am officially weepy.

They just brought me this bag...
Seems Sarah after years of preoccupation is ready to put her My Little Ponies out to pasture.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles underneath? Adieu, with my blessings.

But really, Minty? Apple Blossom? Sea Spray? StarCatcher? Understandably, they've been corralled in stable (well, a Sterilite drawer, really) for at least a year now, but they were still here -- a reminder of this little girl:

Suppose it's time to bid farewell to my My Little Pony loving girl. Maybe it's time to get to know my little growing girl who may just be ready to see The Nutcracker this year.

Today, I'm thankful...
...for my Sarah and Darren's generosity.

for my joyful memories of their earliest years.

...for Double Daddy, who in seemingly similar nostalgia, suggested we pass the ponies to our beloved friends to dole out to their 4-year-old daughter when her behavior merits.

What sweet and thoughtful kiddos!!

You are definitely raising them right, Cheryl! Great job!

Sometimes it's harder on us to get rid of toys than them. There are so many memories attached!

I know how you feel, it's horrible. Oh when it was time to ditch Thomas the train and the matchbox cars, I completely fell apart.

Oh how I wish Jess and Delaney would bring me bags to get rid of. I usually find myself in their rooms when they are not home and doing a "privage purge" just a few things here and there and they NEVER notice!!

Isn't it hard to let them grow up & get rid of their little toys??? I have a tough time with that, too!

isn't it crazy how many memories you find attached to things? how generous of them to part with their toys!

It's good that you're teaching them to part with things early. I still have a bunch of my childhood toys that I can't give up because I'm afraid if I do, the relative who gave them to me might find out and I'd have guilt for years! My husband is the same way. His parents' attic is ridiculously loaded with toys--they never get rid of anything.

STOP!!!
Don't throw out ALL the MY LITTLE PONIES...once I had my 6th graders do an older kid version of show and tell and a student brought in her collection of TROLLS. She saved them in a little suitcase and each one had a story attached to it.
Those trolls represented so many eras in the student's life- I wonder if Sarah could say the same.
Can't she keep ONE? Doesn't she want to have a pony to "represent"?
Oh...I'm a dork.
