With Twins

Labor is doubled---(in more ways than one!)
When life with two babes begins.
Challenge to be sure, but rewards times two,
In a house with twins.

One has a penis; one has girl parts.
So restrooms? Both women's and men's---
Yet "Are they identical?" still got asked,
In the mall with twins.

"He looks like Dad!" "She looks like Mom!"
Onlookers declare with grins.
Makes both the children grimace,
In our house with twins.

Pottery Barn and Candace Olson
Nice yes---but for us---not wins.
Nothing beats the interior design,
That is a house with twins.

Amusement parks and playground fun,
One likes hills and one likes spins,
Mix them up at your expense,
In the ride with twins.

He likes fiction; She likes non-,
In this case, yangs and yins.
Such is the tale of reading books,
In our house with twins.

Days can be hard, consistency's tough,
But each night at our dual tuck-ins,
We say our prayers of heartfelt thanks,
We adore this life with twins.

Way Back When-esday: Preschool Promotion

Dateline: June 2006
Twins' Age: 4

On the last day of their first year of preschool, He-Twin and She-Twin donned their class-created, fish printed shirts and celebrated Hawaiian style.

Double Daddy and I are strong advocates for separate classes for twins, but due to an overload of multiples that year at the preschool (4 sets of twins and a set of triplets---ALL of whose parents wished them separated), to ease the logistics for the staff, and knowing full-well our two were very independent (or so we thought), we agreed to placement in the same class. The year was wonderful; but all concurred, they'd truly flourish the next year---in their own scholastic space.

Seeing their unity in that initial academic foray warms my hear this mid-week.

Why don't you dive into your digital files, and play along with Way Back When-esday?

Correction:
In yesterday's post, I mistakenly indicated She-Twin had managed to extract THREE teeth by employing chewy candy as a helpmate. Two times this week using MaryJanes, and a particularly memorable Circus Peanut incident were in my immediate recall.

We need to retract the count; the accurate number is actually, verifiably blog-documented, FOUR.

Hoping the folks at Twizzlers forgive the unintentional omission.

Method (extr)-Acting

Crisp apples. Crunchy carrot sticks. String and a doorknob.

Past practices of speeding dental denouement seem barbarian---or at the very least, less-yummy---than She-Twin's now thrice proven means of early extraction.

Behold, her tasty--employed TWICE this week alone---twin-novation...
1.) Establish which tooth is ready to make its exit.

2.) Unwrap and do some preliminary chewing on a minimally malleable candy. This week's choice: Mary Janes.

3.) Place the pre-worked candy directly to the loose tooth, chew with verve. Remove the sticky candy wad, and your tooth, and survey the success. Placement under pillow now optional for 9-year-olds (more on that sad revelation later). She-Twin does elect to place her bit of baby-ness in Mom's engagement ring box and wait for the fiscal spoils of her creativity.

Have you some tales and tips for tooth removal? Share!

Big Shoes to Fill

During a lame weekend tidy-up attempt...

Mommy: "Darren, pick up your socks. They're in the middle of the living room floor."

Darren: "Those are Daddy's socks, not mine. You never tell 'Honeybunches' to pick up his socks."

He-Twin's humorous term of endearment selection, his avoidance of clean-up at all costs, and the fact his socks are now nearly large enough to be confused with Double Daddy's, Make My Monday.

Way Back When-esday: The Onset

Dateline: September 7, 2010
Twins' Age:  9 + two days

From He-Twin's third grade daily journal:
"I am so happy about the new school year! It will be SO fun! The kids in my class are [list]. I can't wait to start learning! This year will be a blast! I'm so exited![sic]"

Our son's early in the school year enthusiasm reflected upon this, the day after the school year's end, warms my mid-week.

Half-empty or Half-full ?

Dirty dishes they may be---but this random, lovely-to-my-eye sink arrangement brought a smile.

Plan to keep an eye alert for overflowing laundry-pile prettiness.

Never hurts to hope...

Sesame Street Promulgates Racial Profiling

With my tongue secured firmly in my blog-composing cheek, undeniably, there is a modicum of unintentional truth to the hypothesis.

Like so many in our now-parental generation, with pop cultural blessing, I often find myself singing, “One of these things is not like the others; one of these things just doesn’t belong…” Insidious the undertones.

“Who are the people in your neighborhood?” C’mon! While we’re readily encouraging our kids to identify the individuals populating their immediate vicinity, the byproduct of the activity by default determines those who are not “the people in your neighborhood.”

All those sorting and grouping games? Asking for trouble. Put all the same shapes together. Place all of the items that are the same color together. Group the vegetables together. Segregation, thy name is Sesame.

PBS prodigies, our pair, they came home from a first-grade public dressing-down one afternoon declaring “All the kids on Bus #____ are bad, Mom!”

It wasn’t about skin color. It wasn’t about the riders’ families’ fiscal solvency. It was about an entire bus ridership being called to the principal’s office for poor judgment---captured via on-bus video.

Opportunity given, we discussed how it’s always easier to see misbehavior than good behavior. We addressed the fact that not every child on Bus #____ makes “bad choices.” Regrettably, the empirical reality is that Bus #____’s riders could easily—and without parental intervention would be—pigeonholed into other superficially defined subgroups. Ooof.

Just last week, during a Mommy/Daughter fast-food fest, a turbaned gentleman entered the McDonald’s.

She-Twin (whispering): “Mommy, there’s a terrorist here!”

Mommy (horrified): “Honey! Just because someone wears a turban and a beard, that doesn’t make him a terrorist. You’re saying that based on the way he looks. That’s like saying you’re like Paris Hilton* (*the subject of great disregard in our family discussions) because you have blonde hair and pretty green eyes. You need to know someone’s behavior to make judgments and assessments. You cannot simply lump people together based on their appearance.”

Today’s episode of Sesame Street has been brought to you by the letter “X”---X-Ray. Xylophone. Xenophobe.

We do love our Sesame Street; but as Big Bird sang so eloquently and reassuringly, Everyone Makes Mistakes, Oh Yes, They Do...

Semi-Spiritual Sunday Snippet: Socks and Sculpture

In order to do what one wants, one must first learn do what is needed...
Our Lady of the Laundry is now contently at her clay.

As I admonished her to wash her hands, she provided the insight, "Art is worth way more than dirty hands, and I think you know it."

Ponce de Leon's Pursuit

On a morning ride to school...

He-Twin: "Mom, sometimes I wish you weren't so old."

Mom (heretofore, happily 46): "Does it seem like I am a lot older than your friends' moms?"
He-Twin (earnestly): "Oh no, that's not why! I just don't want you to die so soon."
